The Death of Derrion Albert
It’s hard for me not to comment on the Derrion Albert situation. He was a 16-year-old honors student at Fenger High School in Chicago. A fight broke out between “rival gangs” and Albert tried to help someone who was pulled into the mix. As the melee went on, Albert was hit in the head with a board, and knocked to the ground.
While unconscious, the suspects punched and kicked him, even while he wasn’t moving. Once the situation calmed down, student and nearby workers helped Albert, but it was already too late. Derrion Albert was killed for trying to help out another student pulled into a senseless situation.
Those are the facts. What happened here is tragic. My sympathy and condolences go out to the entire Albert family. A good kid child was lost for trying to do the right thing. Here are my two cents…
First, and foremost, calling these children “gangbangers,” as My Fox Chicago did, may be wrong. Unless used in the context of “a group of people” these kids should not be called a gang unless there is evidence that suggests these kids were gang members. I saw uniforms and not gang colors or paraphernalia. If they are confirmed as a gang, then I take these statements back. This just gets me mad because it’s perpetuating the stigma of blacks being gangbangers and killing each other.
More important that political correctness, is the fact that this child lost his life. There was once a code in the streets. There were unspoken ethics involved with everything. Today’s youth are just wild without cause. I’m sure that whatever the conflict was, wasn’t bad enough that aggression had to be taken out on an unarmed kid trying to get his friend out of harm’s way.
You don’t hit a man while he’s down, especially when he’s unconscious. I wouldn’t do such a thing to my worst enemy. If we get into a fight, and I beat you, that’s where it stops. If it’s taken further then that’s where it goes but this situation is different. This was someone unfamiliar. There was no beef with Derrion Albert.
These kids are savages. Like vultures on a carcass they continued until there was no more left of Albert. Senseless. That’s it. At this point in my life I can look back at everything I’ve done, witnessed and/or heard of and I’m ashamed.
This situation speaks for a generation. These kids live beyond their years and comprehension. They’re way too informed yet have no knowledge. They click World Star Hip Hop and see fights like this one everyday with kids their age. This is my main reason for boycotting them. I cannot blame WSHH for what happened today but I can blame them for glorifying senseless violence in the black community.
You put a kid in a room with a dummy. Then put on a video of another kid beating that dummy with a stick. You give that kid in the room with the dummy a stick and guess what he does? Beats the dummy! So the kid who videotaped this saw the fight and his first thought, or course of action, is to take out a camera and film this fuckery. Not help. Not leave. Not even stand back. Instead he gets into the action like a fucking reality show cameraman.
If you have to fight, you fight for a cause. You don’t fight for a girl. You don’t fight over shit-talk behind your back. Fight for something you believe in. Fight to protect. Fight for your life. Derrion Albert lost that fight. He is now a martyr without a cause. His death was senseless yet so vital to a generation. Maybe these kids will see this and get their shit together? Maybe they’ll aim their aggression at a much better target?
I don’t believe that anything random. He died for a reason. A reason no one may ever understand but a reason nonetheless. Regardless, students lost a friend and a mother lost a son. One way or another (preferabley the other), I hope the ones responsible for this get what they deserve.
That is all from me. Below is what Nas had to say about it.
Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool. Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war! I know that feeling , that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, any one. But….
We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, fila’s , and name plate chains. Deaths over “he say she say”!!!!! “I’m from This block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay”!!!
I remember feeling like I was the hardest “n*gga” breathin. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What r we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state feels your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household.
You have the ability and mind power to change they way we are looked at. Look who’s watching us young warriors, look who’s throwin us in jail constantly, look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Lovin to bury us in the ground or in jail were we continue this worthless war on one another. Young warriors…. We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz This movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, boys n the hood , blood n blood out, Belly!
When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS….and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other.. May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I’m with you young warriors. You’re me and I’m you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.
